1. How do I apply?
By visiting our 'apply' page and filling out the appropriate application form.
Our books are only open for new applicants during the months of March, July, and November.
Please do not email applications. Our e-application forms provide all the information we need for consideration - so please be patient and wait for a month when our books are open.
2. Why was my application unsuccessful?
The most common reason for rejected applications is poor image quality.
We will not accept blurry, low resolution, phone or webcam images.
Images must be professional quality. By professional we mean taken by a professional photographer, preferably in a studio setting or on location.
We may also reject applicants if we consider them to be too ‘mainstream'. Please bear in mind that Dark Arts is a service for ALTERNATIVE people seeking work.
This is not a directory, networking or ‘listing site'. We want members who already have an established portfolio of work.
We do not have time to help anyone who is not already a working model. This is not a site to help you arrange shoots or build up a portfolio.
Having professional photographs does not automatically guarantee representation.
We are an agency and are selective over the members we represent; we only represent members we will be able to find paid work for.
Models should be experienced and regularly working in the industry - not just photoshoots; but paid work for clothing companies, shows and events, or published magazine work.
IF WE DO NOT THINK WE CAN FIND YOU WORK - WE WILL NOT REPRESENT YOU.
We carefully consider every image and do our research on each applicant. We ask for background information and references for this reason.
Your pictures and application information MUST reflect a genuine desire to pursue work in your field.
If we cannot see that you are ambitious or serious about your application, you will be declined.
Not only should you be prepared to work if offered the opportunity, you should be reliable, punctual and professional.
Models… please bear in mind that Dark Arts is not a pinup site. Artistic nudity IS alowed, but please be sure to provide varied images that clearly show your face and your modelling capability (ie. not just body parts, or a strip-tease) – we want to see you!
Photographers... please do not send us pictures of landscapes or animals. Whilst we can see you have skill we cannot show a portfolio of work we can't really promote. If you have a desire to photograph alternative people, places, or events - we need some examples for your portfolio!
3. Can I re-apply?
If you have new images and have undertaken more modelling work since a previous application, you are more than welcome to apply again.
However, please do not continue to submit the same application - if we do not email you within 7 days, your application has been unsuccessful.
4. What if I'm an amateur and I don't have any existing photographs?
We realise everyone has to start somewhere, but you will not be represented by Dark Arts until you have had at least one professional shoot.
We recommend listing at Model Mayhem to build up contacts and a portfolio.
If we've already contacted you about the site, chances are we like your work!
5. What is the image criteria?
We can only accept professional quality images, preferably studio or location shots of a high standard.
Please do NOT apply if you don't have any professional quality images.
The models we currently represent should give you an idea of what we expect.
Nudity IS allowed, but please be sure to provide varied images that clearly show your face and your modelling capability (ie. not just body parts, or a strip-tease).
We cannot use images from pinup or pay-to-view websites featuring a website address watermark.
No blurry, pixelated or low resolution (under 50kb) images.
We are happy to accept images of an artistic nude or horror/gore nature – and they will be visible by ALL users of the site.
However, pornographic ("adult" or "X-rated") images are not allowed on this site (no penetration shots), nor are watermarks or links to soft or hardcore porn sites, or pay-to-view websites of any kind.
This also applies to images of minors (anyone aged under 18) – Dark Arts will NEVER accept any images that may constitute lewd or inappropriate behaviour either explicit OR implied from minors as it would be illegal.
Images that violate copyright laws are not acceptable. Only submit images which you hold the copyright to or have permission from the copyright holder to use.
6. Do I have to be 'alternative'?
You have to be alternative, yes.
We are looking for models with a genuine interest in alternative style and culture. If you're not alternative there are lots of other agencies who will represent you.
We want looks that are not considered to be 'normal' or mainstream; brightly coloured hair, tattoos, piercings, mohawks are all great - basically our models need to be interested in alternative style.
7. Do you accept plus-sized models?
Yes, we accept plus-sized models.
We are a model agency and this is what we do for a living. Our models are mainly offered work in the fashion industry, music industry, event promotions and advertisements. We can't achieve miracles - we provide models for the work that is available, and focus on finding more work for all the models we represent.
If you are alternative AND heavily over weight, there is little to no work at all for you.
However, we never say no - and all applications are considered on the strength of your past experiences and attitude, as well as your images and overall look.
8. Is it free?
Dark Arts representation is FREE. We are non-exclusive, and do not require a registration contract.
9. How do I get paid for work?
As an agency we handle bookings and payments on your behalf and do NOT take a cut of your earnings - instead we charge the client an additional booking fee for our services.
You get the money you have earned, and the peace of mind that Dark Arts will take action against any late payments on your behalf.
Payments are passed onto our members within a 30 day period. Bookings are confirmed with a contract of engagement between yourself and Dark Arts. We will also obtain your payment/bank details when a booking is confirmed to ensure a speedy payment.
10. Can I apply if I am already represented by another agency?
Yes, we don't require exclusivity.
11. I don't have any photos on my computer. Can I send them by post or can I visit your office?
Sorry, we currently only accept applications through our email application forms.
12. Can I apply if I don't live in the UK?
No. Based on our experiences over the past few years we feel we cannot offer work to international members.
Therefore we are now concentrating our efforts on UK residents only.
However, Northern AND Southern Ireland residents can apply, especially those near good transport links like Dublin and Belfast.
13. Can I apply if I'm under 18 years old?
No. We can only represent members who are over 18 at this time.
14. Usernames
When applying for a profile please choose a professional username - 'actual' names are preferred (no need for underscores, hyphens, or numbers!) We reserve the right to make ammendments to profile names or even decline applications with unsuitable names.
Your name should be your known work name or alias.
Models - please try to avoid using popular prefixes such as 'Miss' or 'Lady' unless absolutely necessary.

10. Why have I been removed from the site?
Either you were violating one of our rules and we didn't spot it when you applied, or you were verbally abusive/threatening to other members, or making other members feel uncomfortable in some way. You can also be banned from the site for spamming through the message system, comments or forums.
We want Dark Arts to be a safe, professional environment – any breach of the rules will be dealt with effectively and immediately.
We will not approve applications from individuals who intend to use their portfolio solely for the use of plugging other websites. Nor will we tolerate individuals who use the Dark Arts site and forum to spam or solicit members for other websites.
If we receive negative reports or reviews about any of our members, we may decide to remove them from our books.
Members may also be removed if we can no longer contact you. Please keep us updated should your email address or telephone number change!
If you were previously represented on the old Dark Arts (directory) site, but no longer appear on the new site; you need to re-apply using our new applications forms. You should have received an email informing you of the site change, our apologies if you did not.
All applicants are now subject to our new agency approval criteria. |
